Background:

The 6–8-week summer PIER program seeks to recruit talented first-year medical students into radiology, enhance diversity and address disparities in the field of radiology. The 2024 program had 91 applicants for 40 spots, representing a broad range of gender, ethnicity, geography and socioeconomic backgrounds. Students are exposed to various radiology specialties, listen to didactic lectures and are paired with preceptors to develop a case submission and presentation.

Many continue their relationships post-program, with new initiatives for long-term mentoring and residency preparation.
